We believe the information you provide us should be handled in a secure manner. With most organizations using web based systems, your personal information is passed electronically with greater frequency. With this in mind, we think it is important to know the level of care companies take with your personal and identifiable information.
When you are inputting your information into online quote forms, signing up for certain promotions or purchasing a product you are giving certain critical information to that company. With this being a pretty common practice, it is important to make sure the company collecting the information is going to treat your information the correct way.
When entering information into a website we recommend several tips.
- Make sure you are using https and not http. Before you enter any personal information, make sure the site is a secured site. You can generally tell by looking at the address bar. If the site begins with https and you have not received any warnings, then you can generally assume it is an encrypted site and the information you transmit will be safe.
- Know the company you are providing the information too. If you have followed step one, you can be reasonably sure that the information you entered was secure. If the company you provided the information too then uses unsafe practices to transmit your information, then step one really did not do you much good. Make sure the company you provide your information to has steps in place to protect your information through the whole process.
- Never send private or personal information through email. The original intent of email was to provide basic communication. With that in mind, email was never intended to be a secure conversation and the protocols being used are very easy for hackers to gain access. If you are asked to provide any information that you would share with the world, then don’t send it by email. The one exception to this rule is secure email. Secure email uses encryption to encrypt the data being transmitted. It is a secure form of communication.
These 3 simple steps will help to keep your information secure. While this does not cover every situation, we hope it provides some key concepts to remember. Like in most situations, good common sense will keep you from being a victim of identity theft.
